Huawei has remained the No.2 smartphone vendor globally despite a quasi sales ban in the United States, Forbes has reported, citing figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC).
Smartphone vendors shipped 355.2 million units worldwide in the third quarter, which is a 6 per cent drop from the same period last year and also the fourth straight three-month period of decline in the market.
Huawei shipped 52 million handsets during the period, good for a 14.2 per cent market share, driven primarily by its erstwhile flagship P20 series and Honor brand. The company's newest top-of-the-line line-up, the Mate 20, was recently launched.
Huawei's performance allowed it to hold off Apple, which remained in third spot. The US company shipped 46.9 million handsets, giving it a 13.2 per cent market share - though this included only 10 days of sales with its new iPhone XS and XS Max, but still without the more affordable iPhone XR.
Samsung remains firmly atop the standings with a 20.3 per cent market share, having shipped 72.2 million devices in the most recent quarter.
Atherton Research predicted that it expects, "for the first time ever, that Huawei will remain second in worldwide shipments for the full year of 2018 and reach the top spot in the next two to three years".
Xiaomi and Oppo retained fourth and fifth spots, with market shares of 9.7 per cent and 8.4 per cent, respectively.
