Police have confirmed that one man has confessed to being the “lookout” regarding the double murder of a pandit and his son at their Campbellville, Georgetown home which was reported last week.

Dead: Deonarine Liliah and his 28-year-old son, Gopaul Liliah

INews understands the self-confessed suspect is also a Campbellville, Georgetown resident.

Seven others are presently being questioned.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, it appears as though the deaths of 61-year-old Deonarine Liliah and his 28-year-old son, Gopaul Liliah were as a result of a robbery gone wrong.

The deceased were reportedly killed in their home between July 7, 2018 and July 10, 2018.

This online publication was told that CCTV footage uplifted from nearby cameras revealed a masked man jumping the western fence into the deceased’s yard.

It further displayed the suspect entering the home from the northern door and exiting from the back entrance, with two bulky bags and a bucket in his hands.

The father and son lived in the upper flat of the two-storey wooden and concrete building, facing North at the junction of Craig and Delph Street, Campbellville in a fenced yard.

The lower flat is occupied by a 40-year-old home aid worker- a tenant of the deceased.

According to the tenant, she last saw the Pandit and his son at about 06:00h on July 7, 2018 in the yard and they spoke to each other.

She recounted that at about 21:00h the same day; she heard the sounds of someone walking heavily in the upper flat.

However, the woman said since then, she never saw the two again.

As such, on the morning of July 10, the home aid worker became even more suspicious after a questionable smell began emanating from the upper flat of the house.

To this end, a report was made at the Kitty Police Station and ranks visited the location.

Upon entering the flat, Gopaul Liliah’s lifeless body was discovered lying face down on the floor, in a pool of blood.

In addition, Deonarine Liliah was seen lying on his back in the living room with his head to the east and feet to the west. He was clad in a pair of white long pants and a multi-coloured top.

His face was also covered with the shirt.

Meanwhile the Kitty, Georgetown businessman, who was arrested on Thursday evening for questioning in relation to the murders was released on Saturday.

However, the man who was arrested at the scene after the gruesome discovery remains in custody after he was identified as the man who had sold the pandit’s mobile phone to another man. The buyer remains in custody as well.

A police source confirmed that although the CCTV footage that was collected was not too clear, the main suspect who investigators believed might have killed the two men is the same person that sold the phone to someone else.

This publication was also informed that on the night of the murder, the pandit attended a function on the East Coast of Demerara and would have left after 21:00h and as such, the footsteps that were heard by the tenant could be those of the perpetrator and the younger Liliah.

It is presumed that after the pandit arrived home, he saw his son lying on the ground and before he could have raised an alarm, he was attacked and stabbed to death.

After committing the acts, the perpetrator collected several valuable items from the house and left the same way he entered.

As the Police wrap up their investigation, they are hoping to secure a confession from the man who was arrested at the scene.
