WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane season is around the corner and Thursday Colorado State University or CSU released their first forecast for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

They forecast another above-average season with 17 named storms, 9 of which could become hurricanes and 4 of those being major hurricanes meaning a category 3 or higher. CSU’s next forecast will come out June 11th.

CSU is not the only yearly hurricane forecast to be on the lookout for.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has not released their official forecast yet.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Scalora says there are multiple factors that go into the forecast.

“Temperatures in the Atlantic and right now we’re seeing slightly above normal temperatures. Not quite as high as last year which was a really active season. But slightly above normal and that definitely promotes more fuel for the storms,” Scalora shared.

The warm Atlantic waters are not the only area being monitored.

“Water temperatures over the Pacific are trending cooler than average which could lead to a weaker jet stream over the Atlantic waters promoting more strong development as well,” Scalora proceeded.

“Remember that all it takes is one storm to have a big impact over local areas,” Scalora reminded us.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will release their official 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast in May.
