Shannon Becker with details as NWS surveyed damage in Vernon County

UPDATE: Numerous agencies responded early Wednesday morning to Nevada and Vernon County to assist after a Tornado. The storm was on the ground from 7:32 to 7:44 a.m.

  • EF-1 rated Tornado according to NWS team 
  • 98 mph (maximum)
  • 600 yards wide (maximum)
  • Nearly 17 mile path (16.89)

“NWS survey team found EF-1 tornado damage extending from southwest of Moundville to Nevada to northwest of Walker. Eight train cars were knocked over, widespread tree damage was found, a few homes had roof damage, and numerous businesses suffered varying degrees of damage.” - NWS SGF

KOAM REGION — Storms came from across Oklahoma and Kansas sweeping into Vernon, Cedar and St Clair counties in Missouri.

There are no reports of injuries that we are aware.

Off-duty Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Arty Torbeck shared an image he took of the Tornado through Nevada. “Watched it from town all the way to Walker from my front porch. I live 4 miles east of Nevada.“ 

CLOSED / DETOUR

  • Mo 54 at 1700 Road, cannot turn south, power lines block 1700
  • Austin Ave/Mo 54 in the Nevada City limits some areas closed due to damage 

JOPLIN / JASPER & NEWTON

The City of Joplin including Jasper and Newton counties were under a tornado warning for about 20 minutes due to a Severe Thunderstorm that had the possibility to produce a Tornado.

No reports of damages in Joplin.

MOUNDVILLE AND NEVADA

North of Joplin in Vernon County damage is focused in Moundville and the City of Nevada.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol report there are no injuries in Moundville but there are major storm damages. Watch for updates here on KOAM News Now, Joplin News First.
