PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT | 9 a.m.-4 p.m. “Intersection Between Art and Nature” is the second annual Plein Air Paint Out hosted by the Ventura Botanical Gardens (VBG). On Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5. Artists will be painting in the gardens; creating original artworks representing the flowers, wildlife, rocks, trees, lookout points and sweeping vistas of the gardens. In French, en plein air means in the open air. Plein air painters find inspiration outdoors by interpreting their subject matter in real time, capturing the ever-changing light and drama of their surroundings. If you’d like to meet the artists, VBG will hold an orientation on Friday morning, April 4, at 9 a.m. at the Welcome Center. Once the orientation is over, artists will be available to guests. After that, the artists will be scattered throughout the gardens. Visitors are welcome to stop and chat with the painters as they paint. Admission is free on Friday. VR TRAVEL CLUB | 10-11:15 a.m. through May 29. Sign up for Camarillo Health Care District’s new VR Travel Club and you’ll become a member of a core group that meets regularly for six weeks exploring the world together. Each week is something different, from adventures in Asia, Europe and popular U.S. destinations, to Cuba and North Africa, South America and other places around the globe. CONSTRUCTION AND TRADES TRAINING PROGRAM | Through March 31. Enrollment is now open for the Workforce Development Board of Ventura County’s Construction and Trades training program, designed to help residents of the Tri-Counties become competitive applicants as they take the next steps in their careers in the construction industry. LIFE STORY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM | Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice is bringing back their beloved Life Story program. SPECIAL EVENT GRANT PROGRAM | Through May 1, May 5. The city of Ventura is now accepting applications for its Special Event Grant Program (SEGP), designed to support community events for local residents. To be eligible, applicants must be nonprofit organizations based in the city of Ventura with 501(c)(3) status. If a nonprofit organization based in Ventura does not have 501(c)(3) status, it must partner with a city of Ventura-based fiscal agent that holds 501(c)(3) status. Additionally, events funded through this program must be held on city-owned property, not private property. The SEGP allocates $10,000 annually to support community celebrations by offsetting the city’s required special event permitting fees. Grants will be awarded up to $2,000 per applicant. Thursday, May 1, 1 p.m.: Deadline to request a secure link to the grant portal. Monday, May 5, 5 p.m.: Deadline to submit completed application. WEDNESDAY MEDITATION PRACTICE GROUP | Wednesdays, 6 p.m. The community is invited to a meditation practice group of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula. This group celebrates the diversity of Buddhist, mindfulness, and other meditative orientations and welcomes participants from all contemplative traditions to attend. The group is open to everyone regardless of funds; there is a free will offering ($5 suggested with checks made to UUCSP with Meditation in the memo line, mailed to UUCSP, 740 E Main Street, Santa Paula, CA 93060). The meeting will begin with a reading and short discussion, with a guided meditation leading us into a time of silence. There is power in meditating together. We would love to have you join us. WILDLIFE HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM | Sundays and Mondays. We need your help removing invasive species and improving wildlife habitat at Harmon Canyon. No previous weed pulling experience is required, our docents will provide training. This volunteer opportunity requires hand pulling weeds so please bring your own gloves and any tools that you think might work well.
