GAINESVILLE, Ala. — A two-vehicle crash on Friday night claimed the life of a Epes man. Carl E. Burrell, 62, was fatally injured when his 2004 Toyota Camry collided head-on with a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD driven by Whitney M. Brown Jr., 29, also of Epes.
The crash happened at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Alabama 39, near the 5-mile marker, about five miles south of Gainesville in Sumter County. Following the initial impact, Burrell's vehicle left the roadway and overturned. Authorities confirmed that Burrell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brown sustained injuries and was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa for treatment.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating the incident, and no further details are available at this time.
