One day after Michigan added a point guard from the transfer portal, it lost the player who held down the position this past season.

Tre Donaldson entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, per multiple reports. A Michigan staffer could only confirm things were trending in that direction. Donaldson started all 37 games for Michigan after transferring from Auburn around this time last year.

He led Michigan with 4.1 assists while adding 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He shot 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3. Among his many clutch plays, Donaldson scored the game-winning layup at the buzzer to send Michigan past Maryland and into the Big Ten Tournament finals and hit the go-ahead 3 late in the NCAA Tournament opener against UC San Diego.

Donaldson would not discuss his future after Michigan’s final game, a Sweet 16 loss to Auburn that ended past midnight on Friday. Michigan added North Carolina sophomore Elliot Cadeau via the portal on Monday.

Shortly after the news of Donaldson’s decision broke on Tuesday, he posted a “broken heart” image on Instagram, though it’s unclear what he was referencing. He regularly spoke about the honor of playing for a big-time program like Michigan.

He’s the fourth Wolverine to hit the portal in recent weeks, joining reserves Justin Pippen, Sam Walters, and Jace Howard.
