FALL RIVER — The Borden Flats Lighthome, the historic lighthouse in Mount Hope Bay that hosts hundreds of overnight guests every year, was featured on mega-popular Instagram account Zillow Gone Wild on March 13.

Longtime owner Kevin Ferias has run the lighthouse as a labor of love for over seven years, managing a wildly successful overnight-stay program that has sold out entire seasons for years at a time. He lets guests run the lighthouse for a night and stay in one of the world’s most unique properties.

Ferias put the property up for sale last year, looking to retire — and seeking someone who, like himself, would cherish the lighthouse as he has.

Here’s what to know:

Is the Borden Flats Lighthouse still for sale?

Yes. Last year Ferias listed it for $1.25 million, and a more recent listing has the price adjusted to $1.1 million.

What is Zillow Gone Wild and what did it say about the lighthouse?

The account spotlights some of the most unusual, outrageous or gorgeous properties in the country. It’s since spun off into a TV show on HGTV hosted by Jack McBrayer.

The listing highlights the unusualness of the property: 1 bed, 1 bath, 900 square feet of space on an 87-square-foot lot.

Commenters had some fair questions, like “what’s the address?!? (wrong answers only),” and “Does Amazon deliver there,” and “So do you have to man the lighthouse? Do you get paid to man it? Does the Coast Guard send someone out to man it instead?”

For what it’s worth:

  • Borden Flats Lighthouse is technically in Somerset, not Fall River
  • Sorry, Amazon delivery vans are not amphibious
  • The lighthouse is automated, so you don't have to run it. You may get an annual visit from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration because it contains some weather equipment that needs looking at from time to time, but the Coast Guard gave up ownership in 1963

'Today' show visits Borden Flats

Last year the unusual property sale caught the eye of producers at "Today," who sent reporter Anne Thompson on a visit.

The segment originally aired in mid-December but is available to stream online

In late November, Ferias invited The Herald News on an exclusive tour of the property.

The lighthouse was built in 1881 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was abandoned by the Coast Guard in 1963 and eventually sold in 2010.

Ferias took over in 2017, and runs the property as a nonprofit, putting all income derived from the overnight stays back into maintenance. He has been looking for its next owner, ideally someone who will run it with as much love as he has.

“I’ve turned down several offers because I’ve got to feel it in here, that they have the same passion," he said this past fall. “I haven’t had an interested party yet that wanted to do it themselves. They just want to own it and pay somebody to run it. This place deserves that kind of passion.”
