THE RACE FOR MAYOR OF JACKSON IS HEADED TO A RUNOFF. INCUMBENT CHOKWE ANTAR LUMUMBA MADE IT-- BUT NOT BY BIG NUMBERS. HE RECEIVED 17-PERCENT OF THE VOTE COMING IN SECOND TO STATE SENATOR JOHN HORHN-- WHO GOT 48-PERCENT. THAT WAS ALMOST ENOUGH TO AVOID A RUNOFF-- BUT NOT THE 50-PERCENT-PLUS-1 NEEDED. HERE'S WHAT THE MAYOR SAYS YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE IN THE THREE WEEKS LEADING UP TO THE APRIL 22ND RUNOFF. <"WE'RE GOING TO MAKE SURE WE'RE IN PEOPLE'S COMMUNITY'S, HAVING GRASSROOTS DISCUSSIONS. ONE THING WE'VE ALWAYS PRIDED OURSELVES ON IS GETTING IN COMMUNITY, SO WE'RE GOING TO DO THAT. NO ONE CAN OUT-WORK US. YOU CAN OUTSPEND US, BUT YOU CAN'T OUT-WORK US."> LUMUMBA ALSO SAID-- BECAUSE OF THE FEDERAL INDICTMENT FROM THE BRIBERY SCANDAL-- CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISING IS DIFFERENT FOR HIM. HE AND HIS LEGAL TEAM DECIDED NOT TO SOLICIT AS STRONGLY OUT OF PRECAUTION. THE MAYOR SAYS THAT MAY MEAN LESS SIGNS AND COMMERCIALS-- BUT NOT LESS COMMITMENT TO THE PEOPLE. SENATOR JOHN HORHN HELD A WATCH PARTY LAST NIGHT SURROUNDED WITH FAMILY FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS. AFTER THE RESULTS CAME IN--WE SPOKE WITH SENATOR HORHN ABOUT WHAT THIS MOMENT MEANS TO HIM AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM HIS TEAM IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AS THAT RUNOFF ELECTION APPROACHES. <YOU KNOW THE FACT THAT WE WERE IN A FIELD OF 14 OR SO CANDIDATES AND TO BE ABLE TO PULL ALMOST 50 PERCENT OF THE VOTES I THINK IT'S A BIT OF A MANDATE. SO WE'RE GOING TO KEEP DOING THE THINGS THAT GOT US HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. WE BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE THE MOMENTUM GOING INTO THE RUNOFF WE HAVE THE MOMENTUM GOING INTO TODAY TO KEEP PUSHING OUR MESSAGE OF RESTORING TRUST AND ACCOUNTABILITY, BASIC SERVICE AND PUTTING TOGETHER...SO WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOING IN JACKSON AND HOW WE'RE GOING TO GET THERE. > THE RUNOFF ELECTION BETWEEN HORHN AND LUMUMBA WILL BE TUESDAY APRIL 22ND.
