Spring weather can be temperamental, especially in North Carolina. Severe weather aside, big daily temperature swings are often the norm. In the Piedmont Triad, early March temperatures were up and down, but we finished the month with a lengthy mild stretch.
March madness
The high temperature at Piedmont Triad International Airport hit 70 degrees or better 14 times in the final 21 days, including 2 days with highs in the 80s. In the Triad, normal March highs generally fall into the low to mid-60s.
The 2025 average high March temperature in Greensboro was 67 degrees. That's the seventh warmest average high temperature for the month of March on record, and the warmest since 2016.
As mild as March was, early April temperatures will climb even higher.
Hot start to April
After a few milder days this earlier in the week, a subtropical ridge has formed off the Atlantic Coast. The resulting southeast flow has raised Triad temperatures and dewpoints to levels normally felt in June.
High temperatures will rise into the 80s this week, and the unusually warm weather will stay with us through the weekend. Although drizzle and rain was falling through this afternoon in the Piedmont Triad, high temperatures have jumped into the upper 70s and low 80s Thursday. A stalled warm front finally lifted north toward Virginia allowing for partial clearing. A strong breeze may lift more Gulf moisture through the Triad on Friday, but only spotty showers are forecast.
Here's a look at recent temperatures and rain around the area.
Record high temperatures are in danger of falling on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5.
Don't put away the hoodies and long pants just yet! Triad temperatures are expected to drop quickly next week.
