Winter Storm Hits New Hampshire, Ice Accumulation Warning Continues

MANCHESTER, N.H. — New Hampshire is currently experiencing the effects of a winter storm that began over the weekend, with a mix of wintry precipitation expected to continue into Monday. A winter storm warning is in effect for Hillsborough, Merrimack, Sullivan, and Cheshire counties until noon Sunday due to heavy mixed precipitation and the potential for significant icing.
As of Sunday morning, rain and freezing rain have been reported in southern New Hampshire, while snow and a wintry mix are redeveloping in central and northern areas. Meteorologist Hayley Lapointe advised residents to exercise caution due to icy road conditions. “The icy mix is continuing in many places, with freezing drizzle occurring overnight,” she stated.
Lapointe noted that while freezing rain is expected to taper off by Sunday afternoon in southern zones, central and northern areas will persist with snow and a wintry mix, transitioning to freezing rain as temperatures gradually rise above freezing. “The worst travel conditions are likely in the morning when temperatures are the coldest,” she explained, emphasizing the risk of ice formation on the roadways.
According to the latest forecasts, ice accumulation remains a concern, particularly in southwestern and western parts of the state. Authorities are warning of slippery roads and the possibility of scattered power outages wherever ice accumulates. The situation is expected to improve as temperatures climb above 32 degrees, making further ice accumulation unlikely.
Sunday evening is expected to bring showers, predominantly in the form of rain for southern regions, while northern zones will continue to experience a mix. The warmer weather is expected to lead to highs in the 50s on Monday, along with scattered morning showers. Lapointe cautioned that there is also a chance of downpours and rumbles of thunder Monday evening.
Precipitation is forecasted to taper off late Monday night, transitioning into a period of drier weather through Tuesday. For those preparing for travel, it is advisable to stay informed through local weather alerts and to download the WMUR app for timely notifications.
