CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa's News Now) — After a gloomy Saturday, a round of rain and storms will move into eastern Iowa late tonight. A few strong storms are possible as well. There will then be the chance for a wintry mix and snow by Sunday night.
Scattered showers and storms will move in from the west tonight after 10 p.m. and continue overnight.
The severe threat is low with this system, but the Storm Prediction Center does have portions of eastern Iowa under a marginal risk for tonight into Sunday morning.
One or two of these storms could be strong and produce gusty winds and quarter sized hail. You may also be woken up by some rumbles of thunder or lightning.
Scattered showers will continue into Sunday morning and afternoon, with some dry time in between. Any storms look to stay east of the Mississippi River for Sunday afternoon.
Winds will remain strong through the day gusting 15 to 30 mph out of the northwest, rapidly pulling in cooler air. Temperatures will start out in the upper 50s in the morning, but will fall into the mid 40s by the afternoon.
As temperatures drop and the storm system moves off to the east, there may be a brief period where the rain changes over to snow flurries or a wintry mix.
This would occur from northwest to southeast towards the late afternoon likely around 4 or 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Any snow that does fall would be light and, because of the warm ground and road temperatures, accumulation is not expected. The snow will pass through quickly and should exit the area by midnight.
This system will pass leaving behind dry but cooler conditions for the start of the work week. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will only reach the upper 40s, setting us back below average.
We're now tracking our next storm system set to bring more rain and storm chances to Iowa Tuesday night and into Wednesday, where some strong storms may be possible.
