BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — A heartfelt tribute unfolded in Belmont County as a portion of State Route 149 was officially designated the Sgt. Todd M. Bates Memorial Highway. The ceremony coincided with what would have been Sgt. Bates' 42nd birthday, drawing family, friends, and fellow soldiers to honor his memory.
Sgt. Bates, a native of Bellaire, tragically lost his life in Iraq in 2003. Now, his legacy will be remembered daily by those traveling along State Route 149 in Bellaire.
Melissa Moncer, Sgt. Bates' half-sister, expressed her personal connection to the memorial. "My son actually goes to the school and when I pick him up every day and drop them off I will always get to see that sign," she said.
Former Ohio State Senator Frank Hoagland, who attended the ceremony, highlighted the significance of Sgt. Bates' service. "If it wasn't for people like Todd Bates—he stepped up to the plate and did what he needed to do," said Hoagland.
Mike Weekley, a veteran and friend of Sgt. Bates, described him as "the definition of a true patriot in an all-American town like Bellaire," adding, "I couldn’t think of a better way to honor him."
Sgt. Bates, remembered as a football player at Bellaire, continues to be honored by the team. Friends raised funds for new jerseys, each featuring a gold star in his honor.
Lori Tobin, a friend of the family, reflected on Bates' character. "He was just such a gentleman and he would be proud of living in Bellaire and being a Big Red," she said.
Rick Eden, a distant cousin of Sgt. Bates, shared his belief that Bates would be pleased with the tribute. "I am sure he is looking down and really enjoying this and smiling," said Eden.
Two signs were placed, one on each side of the state route, ensuring Sgt. Bates' memory endures for all who pass by.
