First unveiled in 2024 in China, the S5 EV has now been detailed by MG in the UK – pointing to what the local lineup could look like.

MG will offer the rear-wheel drive SUV in the UK in SE Standard Range, SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range configurations, both with a single electric motor.
The SE Standard Range uses a 49kWh (47.1kWh usable) battery with 340km of WLTP range, and claimed energy efficiency of 16.6kWh/100km.
This can be charged at up to 120kW using DC power. It can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 24 minutes.
Long Range models upgrade to a 64kWh (62.1kWh usable) battery that can be charged at up to 139kW, with a 10-80 per cent charge time of 28 minutes.
Claimed WLTP range is 480km in SE trim and 463km in the Trophy, with energy efficiency of 15.5kWh/100km and 16.0kWh/100km respectively.
The Standard Range has a 125kW/250Nm electric motor, good for a 0-100km/h time of 8.0 seconds.
Long Range models use a 170kW/350Nm electric motor, and can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.3 seconds.
Like the MG 4, the S5 EV rides the Modular Scalable Platform that has been designed specifically for electric vehicles (EVs). It has 47:53 weight distribution and five-link rear suspension.
Drivers can select between Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow and Custom drive modes.
Inside, there's a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as embedded apps such as YouTube, Spotify and Tiktok.
Not every function is buried in the touchscreen's menus.
MG says it has listened to its customers and installed physical buttons to control functions like the sound system and air-conditioning.
The steering wheel with its programmable shortcut buttons will also be familiar to MG 4 owners.
MG also says it has introduced a "wide range of new materials including soft-touch plastics".
Available interior features include two-tone leatherette upholstery, a wireless phone charger, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera, six-speaker sound system, and power-adjustable, heated front seats.
iSmart connectivity allows you to remotely view the vehicle's location and access other information on the vehicle such as tyre pressures, as well as control functions like the air-conditioning.
Standard safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection; blind-spot monitoring; lane-keep assist; and rear cross-traffic alert.
With the S5 EV, MG has introduced an MG Pilot Custom option that allows you to customise and store your preferred settings in an "easily accessible" menu.
Boot space measures 453L, expanding to 1441L with the rear seats dropped. A power tailgate is standard.
MG's new electric SUV measures 4476mm long, 2094mm wide (including the mirrors), and 1849mm tall on a 2730mm wheelbase, making it larger in every dimension than the ZS EV.
Kerb weight ranges from 1635kg to 1725kg.
For the exterior styling, MG says it drew inspiration from its Cyberster, most evident in the split grille up front. There's also a chequered flag signature to the LED daytime running lights, as well as within the tail lights.
The S5 EV sits on 17-inch alloy wheels, with the flagship Trophy upgrading to 18s – thus explaining the slight drop in electric range.
The company has confirmed the colour palette – at least in the UK – will comprise Black Pearl, Arctic White, Cosmic Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red and Piccadilly Blue finishes.
Australian pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch, with the MG S5 EV to make its in-person debut in Melbourne in April.
