For years, we’ve been hearing whispers about Apple entering the foldable game. While the world expected a foldable iPhone to arrive first, it turns out Apple may have other plans.
According to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is developing a foldable iPad Pro that will feature an 18.8-inch display. That’s bigger than any MacBook currently on the market and a serious leap for the iPad line-up.
This isn’t the first time we have heard of such a device. Back in December 2025, there were rumours that Apple could launch an 18-inch foldable device by 2028. New with the latest leak, however, is the idea that this iPad Pro may also feature Face ID under the display.

Face ID has been Apple’s preferred security method for years now, with the company having already phased out fingerprint-based Touch ID on iPhones.
The positioning of the front-facing camera used for Face ID has been the subject of much scrutiny – first with the infamous notch, and later with the Dynamic Island First. Apple now seems to be working on making Face ID invisible, starting with the foldable iPad Pro.
If the rumours are true, Apple will move at least part of the Face ID hardware under the display using a so-called “meta-lens”. This change could then be seen in future iPhones, too.
Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected in 2026, and the foldable iPad is supposedly following in 2027. If the tech works well, we could see more foldable devices coming from Apple.
