Police: Ohio officer charged with reckless homicide after chase ends in deadly crash
A police officer from the Ripley Police Department in Brown County, Ohio, is being charged with reckless homicide after a chase ended in a deadly crash in March.
According to Kentucky State Police, officer Caleb Savage is being charged for his involvement in a crash on KY 3056 in Maysville after a chase that continued for about two miles on March 12.
Police said Savage was attempting to perform a traffic stop on Ryan Mitchell in connection to a property damage investigation.
According to KSP, Savage was in Ohio and proceeded into Kentucky for approximately one mile before activating his emergency equipment to attempt to stop the vehicle, which subsequently failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. During the chase, Mitchell lost control of his vehicle and crashed.
Mitchell suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mason County Coroner’s Office.
KSP confirmed Savage was charged because he allegedly did not call for help after the crash or stop to check on Mitchell. Savage allegedly drove back to Ripley, Ohio.
Savage is charged with reckless homicide, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident.
