SEOUL, March 17 (Korea Bizwire) — A pilot program implementing artificial intelligence monitoring on LG Electronics’ employee shuttle buses has led to significant improvements in driver safety, according to findings released today by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
The three-month trial, conducted from September to November last year on 14 long-distance shuttle buses serving LG Electronics’ Changwon facility routes to Gyeongnam and Busan, showed remarkable results. Driver safety scores improved by 70%, jumping from 48.4 to 82.3 points.
Comparing data from August to November of last year, the AI safety solution demonstrated dramatic reductions in dangerous driving behaviors per 1,000 kilometers. Illegal U-turns decreased by 80.3%, while traffic signal violations dropped by 64.2%. The system also recorded a 56.7% reduction in center line crossings, along with a 46.3% decrease in smoking while driving and a 44.4% decline in mobile phone usage.
Perhaps most notably, drowsy driving incidents plummeted from 0.135 cases in August to 0.009 in October, before reaching zero cases in November. The AI system also improved fuel efficiency, with idle time decreasing by 43%.
Following these successful results, LG Electronics plans to expand the AI safety solution to long-distance shuttle buses across all its facilities this year. The Transportation Safety Authority aims to work with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, private companies, local governments, and transportation associations to implement the system more widely in chartered commuter buses.
“We’ve seen drivers voluntarily improving their dangerous driving habits,” said Jeong Yong-sik, president of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. “We will continue to utilize advanced technologies like AI to create a safer transportation environment for the public.”
