Redpine Signals Launches Suite of Highly Integrated 150 Mbps Single Stream 802.11n Wi-Fi(R) Chips

November 4, 2009

Redpine's Maxi-Fi BEAM150(TM) product family addresses high throughput WLAN applications with 802.11n data rates up to 150 Mbps

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Redpine Signals, Inc., a leading developer of ultra low power multi-standard wireless chipsets and systems, today announced the launch of its BEAM150(TM) suite of highly integrated semiconductor products conforming to the 802.11n standard for single stream devices. The products include the RS9115 2.4 GHz chip with PCI interface, the RS9116 2.4 GHz chip with SDIO and SPI interfaces, the RS9117 dual-band 2.4/5 GHz chip with SDIO and SPI interfaces, and the RS9118 dual-band 2.4/5 GHz chip with PCI, SDIO and SPI interfaces. The Maxi-Fi® BEAM150(TM) device family complements Redpine Signals' highly successful ultra-low power 802.11n Lite-Fi® device family, which in January 2008 was the world's first Wi-Fi certified single stream 802.11n client device.

"Redpine has pioneered ultra-low-power 802.11n technology through its Lite-Fi® products, which are the devices of choice today in industrial, medical and consumer Wi-Fi® markets that need zero-host, ultra-low-power 802.11n connectivity. We are happy to add BEAM150(TM) to our product offerings to cater to the higher-throughput PC and Access Point market segments," said Venkat Mattela, CEO of Redpine Signals. "Our BEAM150 products are the most highly integrated chips in the 802.11n space today. They incorporate Redpine's fourth-generation 802.11 technology, leveraging our vast WLAN patent-portfolio developed over the past eight years, and stand out in wireless performance in adverse environments" he added.

The Maxi-Fi® BEAM150 family support 40 MHz single-stream operation at up to 150 Mbps data rate, as well as all the major features of the ratified 802.11n standard, including support for both 20 and 40 MHz bandwidths, STBC reception, short guard-interval, green-field preamble, and reduced inter-frame spacing, that enable high throughput efficiency providing over 100 Mbps of TCP data throughput to the user. With a programmable MAC, baseband processor, analog front-end, dual-band RF transceiver, crystal oscillator, balun, and a 2.4 GHz Power Amplifier providing over 17 dBm of power output integrated into the same chip, the BEAM150 products are highly cost-effective solutions for high throughput wireless client as well as access point applications. Advanced built-in analog test and calibration mechanisms that re-use the chip's signal-processing capabilities reduce test- time, and therefore cost, significantly.

The products are ideal for high throughput wireless node applications like HD video streaming, storage devices, laptops and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs); for access point applications like wireless routers, broadband access modems, micro access points, 3G-to-Wi-Fi carrier gateways, home gateways and set-top boxes; and for simultaneous client and AP applications for all-Wi-Fi wireless access systems.

The BEAM150 products also address important emerging applications in wireless access in vehicular environments. In addition to support for the draft 802.11p standard, the chips include high-performance channel-tracking that enables 64-QAM operation at 200 mph relative-speeds, thus providing a critical building-block in vehicular safety systems, wireless toll-gate systems, and for data communications at high speeds.

Redpine's offerings go far beyond the chips themselves and encompass a complete set of software for both client and Access Point applications; and on a variety of host platforms and operating systems including Linux, Windows XP and CE. Redpine also offers form-factor reference designs and software for manufacture testing and diagnostics, minimizing effort and time-to-market in the building of complete systems.

The products are sampling now, with volume shipment scheduled for Q1 of 2010.
